Every citizen of the United States, with few exceptions are given freedom. Freedom to pursue happiness, and if you read the constitution, you’ll find that owning a gun is part of that. If you want to buy and procure a firearm, you can do so through a lot of different arenas. When you purchase one of these, you may also be able to exercise your right to carry it with you.
Now, this is a controversial thing because not every state allows this. While you can own a gun in any state, carrying one out in public becomes a different story. Not only that, you’ll need to look into concealed carry laws as well. These are laws in place that allow anyone that has a permit, to carry their firearm with them wherever they go.
The general concealed carry purse laws are in place to protect individual freedoms, as well as the general public. This has all changed in recent years, and you may find yourself confused by the whole issue. To help you understand this, consider the following breakdown of the history, and practice of this law, and how you can exercise your rights in the United states today.
In the past, the rights of gun owners were free and clear. You could carry a weapon with you wherever you went, and rightfully so. However, things started to change around 1813, as crime started to rise in certain areas. This began a domino effect of change, with states passing laws to no longer permit concealed carry of weapons for self-defense. This has changed. As of the middle of the 1990s, many states have changed the laws quite a bit. As far as concealed carry purse laws, you’ll find that not every single state will let you have your gun with you at all times.
There are 4 main policies that you will need to know about when it comes to concealed carry purse laws. You need to know each option if you’re going to explore this topic on a deeper level. The following breaks down the 4 different policies that you are going to face in the different states that you may be in.
Shall-Issue – this is an option that requires you to have a license in order to have a concealed firearm. You will find that there are several restrictions, but overall, you will be able to get a license, if you fill out a form, and pass a few requirements that the state may have.
May-Issue – this is a solution that requires a permit to carry concealed weapons. The local authorities will give you this, and you will still need to apply regardless.
Unrestricted – in this instance, you will find that you do not need a permit to carry a concealed firearm. If law enforcement questions you, you may need to have an explanation, or you may have to deal with certain issues, but overall, you will not need to have a permit.
No-Issue – the toughest of the jurisdictions in place, this means that you will not be able to have a concealed carry purse at all. You cannot have a concealed weapon as a private citizen with very few exceptions to this rule.
Now, 42 states require a concealed carry permit, however, you’re going to find that out of those, 33 states have “shall issue” elements in place. Every state has restrictions that you will need to follow in order to even have a permit and exercise your right to have a firearm. In some states, it’s far stricter, including some that require you to have everything fully enclosed, and not in a concealed carry purse.
Here’s something that you will definitely have to understand. In several states, like California, Hawaii, Indiana, and several others, you will need to have a good reason for wanting this. Known as a “good cause”, local law enforcement will not let you have a concealed weapons permit, without this.
If the above wasn’t enough, consider that many states including Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey require an applicant to show that they have good character, and are “suitable” to abide within the concealed carry purse laws. That’s right, good character is named here.
Alongside the above requirements, you may run into states that will deny the certificate and license if they have any reason to believe that an individual is dangerous in anyway. These states including Utah, Virginia, Missouri, and others deny on this notion a great deal.
Here’s the next hurdle that you may have to look at, as there are a lot of states that require you to not only apply for a concealed carry certificate, but also show that you know what you’re doing. That’s right, you will need to demonstrate expert knowledge of firearm safety and use. If you cannot provide this, you will not be allowed to carry at all. This includes quite a few states from Arkansas, Utah, Texas, Nevada, and many others.
It’s important to realize that you’ll have to deal with further restrictions as a result of trying to navigate concealed carry purse laws. Some states have very strict duration and renewal elements in place. This can be tough to renew a permit, as you may have to go through serious scrutiny including a detailed background check upon renewal. You’ll also have to deal with revocation, changing federal laws, and so much more.
At the end of the day, it’s not an easy thing to navigate all the concealed carry purse laws that are in place. However, as a citizen, you do have the right to apply, and carry if your state allows you to do so. If nothing else, rest assured that you have rights, and you can exercise them, even if there are hurdles in place.
